Tribhuvan International Airport (VNKT)-Taxiway Construction

March 04 2024

Kathmandu, Nepal – In a bid to enhance safety and operational efficiency, Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), hub for both domestic and international flights, is currently undergoing significant infrastructure improvements. After successful completion of its runway rehabilitation project in 2019 where entire Runway tarmac was replaced along with associated taxiways and upgraded safety strips, the latest project involves the construction of a parallel taxiway, which promises to streamline aircraft movements and benefit both passengers and airlines. The current Parallel Taxiway construction work is centered on the southern side of the existing taxiway. The construction works are carried out to create a parallel taxiway that will run alongside the main runway. This strategic addition aims to reduce congestion during peak hours, minimize taxiing time, and enhance overall airport capacity.

One of the key changes resulting during this construction is the displacement of the runway threshold. The starting point for takeoffs and ending of landings at Runway 20 will shift by a substantial 236 meters. Airlines operating at VNKT have been duly informed of this alteration through AIP supplement 3/24, issued on 04 March 2024. Effective from 01 April 2024, airlines must adapt their flight planning to account for the shorter effective runway length. Pilots will need to adjust their approach and departure procedures accordingly. The deadline for full compliance with the new threshold location is set for 31 July 2024. Operating airlines are working closely with Airport Authority and CAAN to ensure a seamless transition. Safety protocols, clear communication, and pilot awareness are paramount during this period of adjustment.
